It is Diwali time now and there is the constant danger of bums due to fireworks. What is your advice on taking care of bums during Diwali time?
MBG, Pune
The problem of burns during Diwali season does not seem to go away from our midst in spite of strong advice from doctors and the fire departments of various municipalities. In tms context, it is useful to know about burns in general. Burns are classified by agent and by degree. The agent of a bum refers too what caused the bum. The degree of a bum refers to its severity.
* If clothing is stuck to the burn, do not pull it off, but cut around it.
* Keep arms and legs elevated if burned.
* Do not break blisters. However, it is okay for them to break on their own.
Needless to say, burns are best prevented during Diwali. Elementary precautions and courtesy to others while lighting fireworks will ensure that more people can enjoy the festivities without grief. I wish you a happy, burn-free Diwali, this year and every year for very long periods which few can afford because of high cost. They also have their own side effects, and so the overall outcome of drug therapy is never totally satisfactory, which justifies the statement that there is no real cure for AIDS. That is why all the cricket players and cine stars you see on these advertisements ask people to prevent AIDS by wearing a condom during sexual intercourse, particularly outside of marriage, rather than try to treat it after getting the infection.
Now, with regard to the Ayurvedic preparation you have mentioned, the fact that the government drug authorities have given them the permission to market the' drug obviously means that they have satisfied themselves with' the data on the effectiveness of the drug. Of course, you may not be able find the exact term AIDS in Ayurvedic text books because AIDS is a disease that has entered the health care scene only in the recent past, and therefore even' Western textbooks published earlier in this century don't carry this term, let alone texts written centuries ago.

But that does not mean that a herbal preparation cannot at all be effective in improving body immunity in AIDS. If you are interested in more details about the drug, as a consumer you can always request for all available scientific information on the drug from the doctor who prescribed it or the company that is marketing it or the health authorities themselves so that you can understand things better.
Dear Dr Srinivasan,
A friend of mine has been prescribed an Ayurvedic medicine for AIDS. The company marketing the drug claims that the drug improves immunity and its efficacy has been proven in clinical studies. I have seen. TV ads saying that there is no cure for AIDS. If so, how does this Ayurvedic drug cure AIDS?
RKN, Mumbai
Dear Mr RKN,
You have asked a very important question that is difficult to answer to every one's satisfaction. But I will try to put things in perspective t~ the extent possible.
AIDS is the short form for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, which in
.simple language means that the body experiences a lack of immunity against infections. It is called acquired because it is not due to any genetic or inborn defect, but rather due to an infection by a deadly virus known as HIV or human immune-deficiency virus, which is acquired most commonly by unprotected sexual intercourse with partners who carry the virus.
What you saw in TV ads is of course true in the conventional sense that~tJ;lere is no radical cure for AIDS; There are allopathic drugs that can directly attack the HIV virus but the effect is not as clear-cut or consistent as with normal
antibiotics that you may take for other infections like bronchitis, etc. Moreover, these antiviral drugs have to be taken
You would also appreciate that in the light of the above, it may not be easy to pinpoint how exactly the drug works in AIDS. It is possible that the herbs attack and kill the AIDS virus directly and/or. they stimulate body immunity indirectly by other' mechanisms which are not yet fully
understood.
